About Gonabad


Gonabad University of Medical Sciences is located in the south of Khorasan Razavi province, Gonabad, Iran. In 1986, the University was founded under the name of Gonabad Nursing and Midwifery College and under the supervision of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences (MUMS) accepting 42 students in nursing field at Associate of Science (AS) level which was promoted to Bachelor of Science (BS) level the following year. Becoming independent from MUMS, in 1995, the University entitled Gonabad College of Medical Sciences and Health Services and as one of the forty two independent schools and universities started its activities in the areas of health treatment and higher education directly under the supervision and auspices of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education.


Since 2005, the University has increased the number of its fields and elevated its programs (from AS levels to BS ones) so that in 2008 the high council for promoting the country's universities and higher education institutions promoted Gonabad College of Medical Sciences and Health Services to Gonabad University of Medical Sciences with three independent schools of Allied Medical Sciences, Health, and Nursing-midwifery. Furthermore, in 2009, the university gained the council's approval to launch its medical program by accepting students in medical field and to start a school of medicine following the journey of Dr Marziyeh Vahid Dastjerdi, the minister of health and medical education, to Gonabad city.


At present (2016), the university consists of four independent schools with twenty-four courses of study at different levels including Medical Degree (MD), master of science (in Intensive Care Nursing, Nursing Education, Special Care Nursing, Health Education and Health Promotion, Community Health Nursing, Environmental Health), bachelor of science (in Laboratory Sciences, Radiology, Nursing, Midwifery, Anaesthesia, Operating Room, Family Health, Public Health, Defense against Diseases, Environmental Health, and Occupational Health, Public Health) and at associate of science (in Medical Emergencies and Oral Health Technician) and two educational hospitals. The university carries out its duties with about 1599 students majoring in different fields, 78 faculty members of different ranks, about 1000 personnel, the capacity to hospitalize 155 patients in its three active hospitals, 38 medical specialists with different specialties, 70 general practitioners with medical degrees, 16 dentists, and 14 pharmacists all of whom or which rank the university first in the province regarding the physician/population ratio. Moreover, the university is ranked first in the nation regarding the ratio of emergency medical services (EMS) base/population having 15 active EMS road bases. It is noteworthy that this university, due to its excellent geographical location, in addition to providing official services to Bajestan's health center, can offer health and medical services to a population of 1500000 within a distance of 100 kilometers from the city center.


The Qanat-e Qasabeh in Gonabad has attracted many historians and researchers as one of the wonderful man-made phenomena in the history and also as the symbol of the man and nature`s compatibility. The Qanat springs form the middle lands of eastern Gonabad, a place called “Borj Ali Zamen”, in sediments and it is formed of seven linked canals. According to the recent studies, the length of the Qanat is 33113 meters and the number of its wells is more than 470; and the depth of the mother well is about 280 to 300 meters. Naser Khosrow Ghobabadiani is the first one who described the Qanat in his travel account and mentioned its depth 700 meters and its length 24 kilometers and attributed it to KeyKhosrow.

Qasabeh ‘qanat’ (karez) one of the deepest wills ever to be dug by man. The 33-Km karez shines as the embodiment of the art and craft of the man in this land. This brilliant feat of historical importance requires the officials’ hands to be immediately come to global attention by being listed in UNESCO's list of World Heritage Program. The qanat is a heritage from the Aryan times which shines in this chapter of history in the Land of the Sun.

Gonabad Great Mosque


One of the valuable buildings of Kharazmshahiams period in Khorasan Province is Gonabad great mosque which is located in the eastern part of this town. The great mosque has two porticos with ornamental portals, courtyard, northern and southern porticos, porch and 3 columned Shabestan (part of a mosque designed for sleeping or nocturnal prayers).

Mend Earthenware


The earthenware of Mend enjoys an ancient history and value among the crafts and handicrafts of Gonabad. The archeological studies suggest that the art was common in this area at least from 3000 years B.C. The various kinds of scattered earthenware in the ancient area and the civilization layers from the archeological searches prove this fact.

Soltan Mohammad Abed’s Tomb

This shrine is located 24 Kilometers away from southern Gonabad close to Kakhak town. According to the historical evidence, he is Imam Reza’s brother who entered Kborasan with his followers after Imam’s martyrdom to fight against enemies. He was finally killed by Abbasid soldiers in Kakhak district.



Gonabad museum is located on the eastern district next to the great Mosque. Eastern north dormitory is selected as the place of museum where one can find strong columns and many arcs and an altar decorated with plaster that belongs to Ghajar period. One of the specifications of museum is another historical altar that has been discovered during the archeological explorations. Also, this altar has plaster decoration and beautiful frieze belonging to Ilkhannid period.
